One of the world’s most successful clothing designers may not be a household name in the United States, but she is undoubtedly the toast of Down Under. Called Australia’s Queen of Fashion, Liz Davenport has now been a fashion force for more than 35 years.
Davenport began her career in 1972 as a fashion agent in Perth, Western Australia. But the creative urge prompted her to create her own line of designer dresses, and within three years her line of coordinates and sportswear were being sold in more than 300 boutiques and department stores in Australia, New Zealand, and Singapore. Her regional success soon led Davenport to open signature stores, including a boutique on London’s famed Bond Street, and in 1980 she was named Australia’s top designer by the Fashion Industry of Australia.
While her early success was largely localized, over the course of her career, Davenport has also dressed Hollywood celebrities, the Queen of Thailand, and politicians, as well as providing fashions for two Miss Universe pageants and the America’s Cup.
Yet Davenport is still best known for two fashion innovations. The first was her miracle-in-a-suitcase that contains 22 separates, which can be combined in literally hundreds of ways. The second was the designer’s four piece principle, which is comprised of a sleeveless top, skirt, jacket and pants. The four pieces are of one, preferably dark, color that can be worn with coordinating prints. Davenport urges using dark colors because they are slimming and help make the wearer seem taller.
2010 marked Davenport’s 35th anniversary as a fashion designer, and in that year she was honored with two retrospective exhibitions held at the Perth and Fremantle museums. In January 2011, Liz was awarded an Order of Australia Medal “for service to the fashion industry, and the community.”
Despite her years of achievement, Davenport shows no sign of slowing down. She is currently planning a housewares collection, and is writing a book about fashion design and how to dress each particular body type.
“The next two years will be the very exciting,” Davenport says. “There is still so much more to do to help women all over the world look and feel their best.”
